MIT University's prestige in computer science and almost all forms of engineering has been widely admired. What is the MITES Summer Program?

MITES (Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science) comprises a comprehensive,  6-week, on-campus summer program developed to introduce talented high school juniors from underrepresented minority backgrounds to engineering and science disciplines. Throughout the program, students take 5 intensive courses covering math, science, and humanities to discover new facets of STEM and to deepen their knowledge in an all-encompassing method. Furthermore, these high schoolers can opt to participate in lab tours and social events and benefit from college admissions counseling. This national program provides first-hand insights into the value and reward of STEM degrees and careers while developing the academic and personal skills vital to a brighter horizon in high schoolers.

Key Details of MITES Summer Program

  • This camp lasts 6 weeks over the summer—late June through early August.

  • Classes, recitations, workshops, and tours are on weekdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

  • Social events, office hours/homework, and exploration of the Greater Boston area are permitted on evenings and weekends.

  • Room and Board are provided, free of charge!

MITES Summer Application Process: Securing The Spot 

With all these fantastic experiences that the MITES Summer Program extends to high school juniors, it is crucial to highlight MIT’s highly meticulous application process and its holistic view of the selection of applicants.

Listed below is all the information required to submit.

Academic Information

Applicants will be asked to provide their high school course history and upload an unofficial transcript which includes their GPA and completed courses from 9th and 10th grades as well as from the first quarter of their 11th grade year, if available.

Test’s Scores (optional)

While test scores are NOT required for applying, it is strongly encouraged that applicants submit scores from at least one standardized test including: SAT I, PSAT, ACT, AP, or ACT Aspire/PLAN. MITES admissions process is holistic, which means they consider many distinct factors and information shared in all sections of your application. Test scores provide a more complete picture of the applicant. 

5 Short Answer Responses 

MITES short answer questions are designed to give them a sense of who their applicants are as individuals. It’s encouraged that applicants begin brainstorming early and use each short answer prompt as an opportunity to share a different facet of themselves with MITES. Each short answer response has a word limit of 300.

Extracurricular Activities 

Applicants will be invited to tell us about their extracurricular activities. The extracurricular activities section of the application gives us a sense of our applicants’ passions and interests outside of the classroom.

3 Recommendation Requests 

Students are required to send 3 recommendations that must be submitted by the recommenders via the online portal by February 15. Once an applicant selects who their recommenders will be, they will receive an automated email from our application portal with a link to fill out the unique recommendation form. Each applicant will be asked to identify one recommender from each of the categories below.

  • Math or science teacher

  • Humanities teacher

  • School counselor or administrator

Tips To Get Into MITES

Now that you know all the prerequisites required to apply to the MITES Summer Program, here are some additional, practical pieces of advice to guarantee your enrollment. MITES can be hard to get into, but with the right preparation, your application can stand out from the rest.

Tip #1: Prioritize academics and secure strong recommendations

Maintaining strong academic performance is crucial for aspiring participants in the program. Demonstrating a passion for academics is an expected attribute among program attendees. Therefore, the presentation of high grades on your high school transcript could be advantageous. Given MITES's emphasis on STEM, it’s advised to enroll in challenging courses in mathematics, science, and engineering. Examples of recommended courses include AP Physics 1/C and AP Calculus AB/BC, which can significantly enhance your preparedness for the MITES Summer program.

Additionally, by demonstrating your commitment to academics, you’ll be fostering connections with teachers who could support your recommendation requests in the future. Identify those STEM and humanities teachers with whom you've developed strong relationships, and consider seeking recommendations from those who know you well from your sophomore or junior year.

Tip #2: Attain high scores on standardized exams

Participate in standardized exams! While they aren't mandatory, achieving high scores can significantly enhance your chances of acceptance. If you've taken AP classes, aim for scores of 4s or 5s. Consider registering for the PSAT, offered annually in October, especially if you're in the earlier years of high school. It's crucial to take it before applying for MITES Summer or MITES Semester in 11th grade. Additionally, you may submit SAT or ACT scores to further bolster your application

Tip #3: Gain relevant research experience 

Given MITES' emphasis on passion in STEM, showcasing prior research experience substantiates your deep commitment to this field. If you're eager to delve into research, it is advisable to reach out to your high school teachers, guidance counselors, or university professors engaged in work aligned with your interests. Seeking opportunities in summer programs, whether at a local, state, or national level, can also be a valuable experience for high school students to actively participate in the research process.
