Soaring High: Aerospace Engineering Internships for High School Students

Aerospace engineering is a field that involves designing, building, and engineering to enhance aerospace technologies. For high school students with a passion in STEM, doing an internship in aerospace engineering can be extremely insightful. In this blog post, we will explore the exciting world of aerospace engineering internships, meant specifically for high school students, by discussing the benefits and examples of how to get involved. For high school students who dream of reaching for the stars, aerospace engineering internships are the perfect place to start, and go towards a future in which the sky is no longer the limit!

Benefits of Aerospace Engineering Internships for High School Students

Hands-On Experience

  • Aerospace engineering internships provide a unique opportunity for students to use their knowledge and classroom learning in real-world applications and problems.

  • Internships in Aerospace Engineering allows students to work hands-on by doing project-based learning, experimentation, and get exposure to the activities of aerospace individuals

  • Many aerospace engineering internships involve projects, lab activities, prototyping, testing the prototype, getting to meet the professions, and finally creating report or conclusion on the findings

Skill Development

  • Aerospace Engineering Internships also allow students to advance their skills that are crucial for this field. Not just is problem-solving an important part of the field, with it comes effective teamwork.

  • Students will gain first hand experience of a high-tech environment, and get exposure to extremely cool technology and tools for the industry

  • Students are also able to enhance their resume, in which they can talk about how they have proficient and a fundamental skill set for this field

Communicating with Professionals in the Field

  • In these educational aerospace engineering internships, students are able to work with experienced professions and get an insight to different tasks in the field

  • Keeping the connections with professionals can significantly impact students educational and professions journeys

Examples of Aerospace Engineering Internships for High School Students

Many organizations offer aerospace engineering internships especially made for high school students. Some organizations are organizations that you have probably heard of, others may sound new but they are all extremely insightful and exciting! Although the availability, restrictions, and application process vary from internship to internship, here are some of the internships for high school students, specifically in the field of aerospace engineering:

  • Nasa Internship Program in Langley Research Center

    • The NASA Internship Program  is specifically designed for those who are interested in aerospace engineering. The internship takes place at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. NASA internships are available all year and last ten weeks over the summer, but eight weeks during the fall or spring for students older than 16 and a sophomore in high school.

    • This internship provides hands-on experiences and extremely educational and interesting topics. Students can work on research in topics such as aeronautics, aerospace engineering, atmospheric science, and space exploration - the topic for research depends on the ongoing projects at the center.

    • The application requires submitting a resume, academic transcripts, and letters of recommendation

  • Lockheed Martin Space High School Internship

    • The  Lockheed Martin Space High School Internship offers students a unique opportunity to collaborate with aerospace scientists and engineers. Students who are 16 years are older, can engage in a 9-10 week immersive experience from June to August, and they can spend 30-40 hours while also receiving an hourly wage.

    • The projects in this internship involve the development and implementation of processes, procedures, and systems aligning with the Lockheed Martin mission statement across the seven states nationwide. This internship also allows for more networking opportunities and career development skills.

Taking part in an aerospace engineering internship as a high school student is similar to launching a rocket! They are both full of excitement, potential, and include the promise of reaching new heights! These internships not only provide a look into the world of aerospace engineering, but they also provide students with the skills, knowledge, and connections essential to a successful career in aerospace engineering. So, take the opportunity, and apply for these internships and prepare for an exhilarating journey that coils shape the future of aerospace engineering. Keep in mind, the sky is not the limit!
